2 Weeks of Mom in Japan

This is going to be short, but it’s at least an update. My mom got here 2 weeks ago (saturday, april 7th). This is what we’ve done so far…briefly.

Satuday night we went to Harajuku to see the Harajuku girls, there were 5…we stayed in Iriya (just north of Ueno) at a business hotel kinda thing for 3 nights. We went to Yasukuni shrine, did a tour of the imperial grounds, went to shinjuku, shibuya, ueno/ueno park and Asakusa (which wasn’t planned until I was woken up at 7am with a knock on the wall of my room. After that, we headed to Moto-Hakone, near Mt. Fuji for a night. A 30 min shinkansen ride followed by an hour long bus ride had us way up in the mountains at a nice little guest house. We stayed there just the one night and explored the town the best we could….it was small. It was a good break because we ran around tokyo like crazy people for 3 days. We then headed to Kyoto, rode bikes around the city seeing the golden palace, a geisha performance, the kyoto imperial palace (not very impressive), nijo castle and about a zillion other rocking temples. Some we couldn’t take pictures inside so the pics don’t show everything we’ve seen. Next was Osaka, we stayed right on Dotombori which is a famous river/street. It was pretty cool. We did a day trip to Nara while staying in Osaka to check out Todai-ji (the biggest wooden buddha in the world amonst other things. Nara was the first actual capital of Japan, so it was really fricken cool. On sunday we headed back to Fukushima and I went back to work. We’ve had dinner and lunch in random places….my streak of no classes ended when I went to a visit school but I am still classless at Higashi, almost 3 months!! WICKED!!!! (sarcasm). The caligraphy teacher at higashi did have mom and I in to one of her classes and it was really cool, except for the Principal hovering around us the whole time…that was weird.

We’ve just returned from Nikko today…it was really amazing as well. Temples and scenery all over the place. I am starting to get templed out. All of the pics from both of these trip are below, Mom’s pics from Tokyo and the first night in Hakone are going to be in a separate folder as our camera’s weren’t sync’d up so those pics are dated 13 hours behind the actual time that it was.

Mom’s here for another 6 days and the day she leaves Drew (staying 2 months) and Nathan (staying 3 weeks) get here and I’ll get to do the Osaka/Kyoto/Nara thing all over again. Somehow I doubt that I’ll ever have time to write a proper blog about all of this, so the thousands of pics will have to suffice.
